Australia Day

Get ready for a witty look at our Nation’s identity.

A Cracker Comedy where an Australia Day committee goes off the rails and celebrations descend into comic chaos.

A bang-up-to-the-moment barbecue-stopper of a comedy, Australia Day follows a mob of bumbling bureaucratic battlers as they debate the details of the national day.

If you’ve ever had anything to do with a committee, organized a school fete, fundraiser or celebration, you’ll love this comedy of colourful characters who clash at every turn.

Drawing on his own experiences as an Australia Day Ambassador, Jonathan Biggins, pieces together a play full of fearless wit and straight up Aussie humour that is sharply observed.

Set in Coriole, a regional coastal town in South Australia, The Australia Day Shire Committee is deciding how to celebrate Australia Day, in a multi-cultural way. For the Committee Members, the issue of cultural identity is a contentious one. With colourful characters including an ambitious Liberal Mayor, an Australian-born Vietnamese school teacher, a Greens Councillor and a member of the CWA all fighting for their own celebration, it quickly snowballs into a very complex and controversial matter indeed.

Watch as the celebrations disintegrate into predictable chaos with some wonderfully comedic moments.

Written and directed by acclaimed playwright and Sydney Theatre Company satirist Jonathan Biggins (The Wharf Revue).
Featuring Dennis Coard.

If you want social satire and huge laughs at the expense of, well, just about everyone in our sun-drenched country, Jonathan Biggins' Australia Day is just the ticket.
