Noni Hazlehurst in Mother
‘I said I was a good mother. They said I was a bad mother. I didn’t know what they meant’
A one-woman play written for acclaimed, award winning actor Noni Hazlehurst, Mother is the newest work from Daniel Keene (Boxman, 2013) directed by his long-time collaborator Matt Scholten.
A fictional story based on the writings of Dorothy Hewett and the ancient Greek play Medea, Mother is a uniquely Australian piece of theatre that honestly tackles the issues of motherhood, poverty and isolation. The combination of powerful script writing, tender direction and Noni’s magnetising performance make for a surprisingly touching and insightful night of intimate theatre.
Christy is a homeless, aging woman, living on the outskirts of suburbia. She is something of a celebrity, attracting the curiosity of the locals, she’s not shy of an audience and amuses herself with telling anyone who will listen to the story of her colourful, troubled life.
One of Australia’s leading actresses, Noni Hazlehurst has received two Logies for her performances in the mini-series Waterfront and Ride on Stranger as well as four AFI Awards for Little Fish, Waiting At The Royal, Fran and Monkey Grip.
If you only see one piece of drama this year, make sure it is Mother – a story and a performance not to be missed.

Drowning in Veronica Lake
The Golden Age of Hollywood revisited, and its dark underbelly exposed!A striking, sultry and honest play that combines the majestic acting prowess of Alex Ellis with Phil Ormsby’s razor sharp and engaging script, and a gown to die for, to produce a thoroughly enjoyable night of theatre. The performance shines a light on celebrity, tragedy and isolation, whilst in the eyes of millions.
Revisit the Golden Age of Hollywood with a darkly comic tribute to 1940s screen siren - Veronica Lake. Smart, sexy, and ice-cool, in 1942 Lake was the hottest discovery in Hollywood, dining with the President and piloting her own plane across the continent. In less than a decade she was stuck in a dramatic nose dive, famously sued by her own mother and bankrupted by the IRS. Now, trapped somewhere between Paramount and Purgatory, she wrestles with stardom, booze, the wrong men and a spectacular decline into obscurity.
'A stunning and mesmerising performance enhanced by an intelligent and sensitive script by Phil Ormsby and expressive soundscape arranged by Colleen Davis... A brilliant cameo featuring an extraordinary talent.' The National Business Review

Calendar Girls *Selling Fast*
When Annie's husband John dies from leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room.
They manage to persuade four fellow Woman’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an "alternative" calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements, and a little help from the hospital porter and an amateur photographer they complete their calendar.
The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales (UK). The calendar is a huge success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.
Based on the true story of eleven Woman’s Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund; Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history, received the What's On Stage Award for Best New Comedy in 2010 and is now a worldwide comedy hit!
‘It's marvellous theatre, guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and come out singing Jerusalem.’ Mail on Sunday
‘Dazzlingly funny, shamelessly sentimental and utterly captivating ... the mingling of pathos and comedy here is simply unbeatable.’ Spectator
