Executive Director - Burrinja Cultural Centre

Burrinja – The Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre – is a living, vibrant and welcoming cultural centre providing opportunities for artistic, cultural and community experiences.

Following twenty years of strong growth and development, the Board is seeking a talented, creative and experienced leader to continue to foster a culture of excellence and innovation and to strengthen the centre’s influence within and beyond the region.

Situated in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne’s outer east, Burrinja promotes, develops and presents arts and culture in the region; helping to develop diverse ways of understanding and living in the Dandenong Ranges. This perspective recognises and builds on the First Nations’ experience and heritage through our programming and practice; and provides opportunities for the development of creative arts enterprise.

Burrinja engages over 80,000 people per annum in performances, exhibitions, studios, festivals and events both at the centre and in activated spaces throughout the locality. It is recognised as the cultural hub of the region, contributing to the social, cultural and economic fabric of the community.

Burrinja itself encompasses visual, curatorial, performance and live arts activities and spaces. It includes an extensive public collection of Indigenous and oceanic art; a 400-seat theatre; a large multi-purpose and performance space; galleries; artists’ studios; cultural development production; museum collection management; rehearsal, making and meeting spaces; live music and a licensed café.

The Candidate

As Executive Director, you will have the opportunity to lead this regional arts hub through its next stage of strategic, physical and creative development. Supporting the team and community through a $3M renovation which, in early 2020, will result in enhanced artist studios, galleries, multi-purpose areas and café spaces. In addition to this physical reworking, the organisation is looking to this new Executive Director to lead the strategic reimagining of the centre and its relationship to community through a new 20-year vision.

As a visionary and resourceful leader, you will have a proven track record of developing innovative and engaging programs that attract diverse audiences and support the region’s community. Together with a small and highly talented team, you will provide leadership which ensures Burrinja remains a creative workplace dedicated to professional excellence. In addition to your strategic skills, you will be ‘hands on’ where needed, and will apply your entrepreneurship to the centre’s theatre programming.

You will have the resourcefulness and innovative capacity to recognise and create opportunity out of potential – to take the nub of an idea and grow, develop and resource it into an outcome with significant impact. This skill will be particularly salient in how you manage the centre’s budget in times of fluctuating and at time scarce financial and community resources.

You will have the ability to work methodically through complex scenarios over the long term to achieve desired outcomes, both internally and externally. You will need to be comfortable working to resolve issues and have the ability to explain and stand strong beside well-informed decisions.

Finally, you will have demonstrated superior stakeholder management and communication skills to ensure relationships are continually strengthened and extended across a diverse range of people from a variety of sectors.

Salary: Salary range: $92,000 - $100,000 dependant on experience + 9.5% superannuation.
