Creative Director & CEO
Burrinja – The Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre – is a living, vibrant and welcoming Centre providing opportunities for artistic, cultural and community experiences.
Following twenty years of strong growth and development, the Board is seeking a talented, creative and experienced leader to foster the continuing culture of excellence and innovation and to strengthen the centre’s influence within and beyond the region.
Situated in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne’s outer east, Burrinja promotes, develops and presents the arts in the region. Through its cultural programs and events Burrinja is helping to develop and promote the diverse ways of understanding and living in the Dandenong Ranges. This perspective recognises and builds on the First Nations’ experience and heritage through our programming and practice. The enterprise provides opportunities for the development of a full range of creative arts.
Burrinja engages over 80,000 people per annum in performances, exhibitions, studios, festivals and events both at the Centre and in activated spaces throughout the locality. Burrinja is recognised as the cultural hub of the region because it contributes to leading the social, cultural and economic fabric of the community.
Burrinja provides spaces for visual, curatorial, performance and live arts activities and programs. There is a 400-seat theatre, a large multi-purpose and performance space, galleries, artists’ studios and a licensed café. There is an extensive public collection of Indigenous and oceanic art that is curated for periodic exhibitions in a newly created gallery. These spaces facilitate cultural development and live music production, museum collection management, rehearsal, art making and meeting spaces and community meetings.
Burrinja is a complex arts organisation and the skills required of the Creative Director & CEO are broad and varied. Burrinja requires a Leader who is passionate about community engagement and cultural development who will understand Burrinja’s numerous stakeholders and navigate a successful path with them.
Burrinja’s Creative Director & CEO will be a visionary and resourceful leader, with a proven track record of developing innovative and engaging programs that attract diverse audiences and support our region’s community. Together with a small and highly talented team, they will provide leadership which ensures Burrinja remains a creative centre dedicated to professional excellence. In addition to their strategic skills, they will be happy to be ‘hands on’ where needed, and will apply their entrepreneurship to the centre’s theatre programming.
The Creative Director & CEO reports to the Board and is responsible for leading the overall vision, strategy, creative and curatorial framework for Burrinja’s entire artistic program in collaboration with engaged communities and develops and leads the organisation’s strategic direction and governance.
The person we are looking for will be comfortable with and committed to a highly collaborative working relationship with both the Chief Operating Officer – creating an effective Executive Leadership Team – and with the Board and key stakeholders.
With resourcefulness and an innovative capacity the Creative Director will recognise and create opportunity out of potential – to take the nub of an idea and grow, develop and resource it into an outcome with significant impact. This skill will be particularly salient in how they source and manage the centre’s budget and raising of funds in times of scarce financial and community resources.
They will have the ability to work methodically through complex scenarios over the long term to achieve desired outcomes, both internally and externally. They will need to be comfortable working to resolve issues and have the ability to explain and stand strong beside well-informed decisions.
Finally, they will have demonstrated superior stakeholder management and communication skills to ensure relationships are continually strengthened and extended across a diverse range of people from a variety of sectors.
