About Burrinja

Burrinja is at the heart of the creative community of the Dandenong Ranges. 

Burrinja is a not-for-profit organisation that thrives thanks to the support of Yarra Ranges Council, artists, visitors and our community.  We deliver a wide array of cultural experiences to the Dandenong Ranges region and beyond. The 400 seat theatre and 130 studio theatre combines professional performers, community and school productions with a range of commercial and other hire events, while three exhibition spaces, artist’s studios and cultural development events ensures a vibrant visual and community arts program.  

Annually, Burrinja supports around 300 activities both inside the facility and out in the community, reaching around 80,000 people annually.

Expression of Interest: Board Members 

Burrinja is seeking Non-Executive Directors to join our volunteer Board and lead us into the future, fulfilling our mission of Building Community Through Arts in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges.

Why join Burrinja’s Board?

As a Board Member, you will play a pivotal role in Burrinja’s governance and strategic direction. We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with strong skills in Philanthropy & Fundraising, Legal Guidance and Financial Management. Experience or interest in visual arts, the performing arts and community development is also highly regarded.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of Burrinja.
Financial Oversight: Provide oversight of Burrinja’s financial performance and risk management.
Philanthropy and Fundraising: Provide expertise in building and nurturing relationships with donors, sponsors and other key stakeholders to support Burrinja’s strategic priorities and financial sustainability.

Core Commitment

Attend six Board meetings annually plus planning days as required; participate in at least one subcommittee; engage with Burrinja activities by attending events.
Board appointments are for three years, with the ability to renominate.
Burrinja is a cultural hub for the Dandenong Ranges and we are looking for Board members who have a connection to the region: for example, people who live or work here, or have family or cultural connections here. Board meetings are held in a hybrid format (in person or via zoom), however we encourage in-person participation wherever possible.

Your Experience: Outline your professional background, particularly highlighting any experience relevant to our Board priorities and/or the performing arts. Please provide specific examples of how your skills and experience align with the needs of Burrinja.
Your Interest: Explain your motivation for joining the Burrinja Board, and how you believe you can contribute to the organisation’s success.
Commitment to the Role: Demonstrate your willingness and ability to meet the commitments associated with being a Board Member, including attending Board meetings, participating in subcommittees, and engaging with company events.

Current Positions

Theatre Technician

Calling theatre technicians! Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey has beautiful venues you could make your home base.

We are offering a part-time ongoing position for 30 hours a fortnight plus additional casual shifts during busy times to operate audio, lighting, and visuals for dance, drama, music, circus, and more. Technical work on rehearsals, bump-ins, bump-outs, and theatre maintenance, such as testing and tagging, is included.

Completion of tertiary or industry training will be well regarded, as will exposure to projection, safe set building, and circus rigging. Flexible evening and weekend availability to run shows is needed. Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, you will make the magic happen in our gorgeous 400-seat theatre, foyer, three galleries, and 100-seat music venue.
