Ralph McTell ~ Live in the Lyre: Festival of Folk

Sat 2 Mar @ 8.00pm | Burrinja Theatre

Returning to Australia for the first time in five years, English musical legend Ralph McTell will be armed with his guitar and the much-loved songs from his illustrious career that spans over six decades.

The unassuming singer-songwriter is a prolific touring and recording artist with a knack for illuminating the present and the road ahead with a strong connection to a shared, storied, past.

McTell is an artist who has always defined his own artistic term, his music emanating grace, experience and learning, natural poise and deep substance with harmonic and melodic riches contained in voice, songs and six stringed guitar glory.

Audiences all over the world still flock to hear and sing along to the timeless classic that catapulted him to global fame. Fondly abbreviated to “Streets”, the melodic beauty and cold hard truth of the song keeps it forever relevant.

McTell also tells his incredible life stories to enraptured audiences with song and banter. From hitch hiking with Rod, then known as Mod Stewart, playing Isle of Wight Festival alongside Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, a crap game with Tom Waits in LA, an Ivor Novello and numerous folk awards. Live in the Lyre

Xani ~ An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music ~ Live in the Lyre

Fri 17 Nov @ 8.00pm | Lyre Room

Xani, the award-winning musical alchemist, brings her latest album 'An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music' to life, Live in the Lyre. Get ready to be transported to a limitless and timeless musical world, with Xani's string-filled genre-expanding tracks.

Join us for a night of boundless dancing, soulful music and powerful vocals. Experience the music of Xani, who has been awarded 'Best Musician' at the Music Victoria Awards and whose sound and voice have won over fans at packed theatres, small steamy jazz venues, nightclubs, and even on Twitch, where she has thousands of followers.

'An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music' is an acutely personal interpretation of the evolution of electronic dance music, and Xani, along with her musical collaborators and friends, will take you on a journey through its (inaccurate) history chapter by chapter. From the wide-eyed naive 'Michelle' to the euphoric fast tempos of 'B U Want 2 B', this album weaves through the blurring world of acid house, disco, psytrance, and more, with Xani's two self-produced tracks, 'Astrojet' and 'Road Trip'.

Don't miss this chance to experience the musical alchemy of Xani and friends, as they bring their unique sound to the stage. Let's dance together and wonder what the future of electronic dance music might sound like.

“May this collection of songs transport you, inspire you and fill your hearts with disco smiles. This is my inaccurate history of electronic dance music, dreamed up straight from my heart to yours.” - Xani

Live in the Lyre

Minor Gold ~ Live in the Lyre

Thu 2 Nov @ 8.00pm | Lyre Room

Minor Gold are the new Americana/Folk duo featuring ARIA nominated, award-winning songwriters Tracy McNeil & Dan Parsons. Living in a van whilst touring as solo artists in early 2020, Parsons and McNeil hightailed it out of Melbourne Victoria up to sunny Queensland, narrowly avoiding the winter as the first lockdown occurred. Holed up in the land of palm trees and perfect weather, the duo subsequently wrote their debut album ‘Minor Gold’ – released August 11, 2023.

Weaving masterful harmonies around stripped-back, organic arrangements that draw on the breezy sounds of 70’s west-coast pop, the daydream haze of 60’s folk to the ballad-power and polaroid romance of the 80’s, Minor Gold display a spellbinding musical connection throughout this superb collection of songs.

“The pairs real superpower is their melodic vocal interplay and sixth-sense harmonies…Imagine standing at a crossroads, halfway between Laurel Canyon and a sandy palm tree cove. These are the intoxicating sounds you might hear drifting on that summer breeze.” - Chris Familton Rhythms Magazine

In under a year, Minor Gold have released three singles, each added to national high rotation on Double J. In February 2023, the duo charmed audiences at Folk Alliance International in Kansas City, and have just completed a 26+ date North American Tour with an Official Showcase at the AmericanaFest in Nashville and additional shows supporting The Teskey Brothers in major venues in the U.S. & Canada.

Cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.

Joined by his friends and collaborators, Ryley Duncan’s performance explores the music of Bon Iver. Each arrangement pays homage to the raw honesty of Bon Iver’s song writing, while exploring the vast wilderness of improvisational possibilities.

Emma Pask ~ Live in the Lyre

Fri 12 May @ 8.00pm | Lyre Room

Award winning Australian vocalist Emma Pask has firmly established herself as one of this country's favourite voices in Jazz.

Her effortless honest stage presence combined with her powerful vocal ability, leaves audiences spellbound and inspired. Emma is sure to delight as she interweaves storytelling through timeless swinging jazz standards, upbeat Latin rhythms, tender ballads and of course some raucous blues.

While Emma’s voice and style are unique, and individually her own, her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz, when swing was top of the charts. She joined his band as the lead vocalist at 16, and went on to spend 20 years touring the world with Morrison.

Kerryn Fields

Fri 23 Sep @ 7.30pm | Lyre Room

Fuelled by humility, integrity and a raw clarity of vision, Kerryn Fields paints enduring musical portraits that detail the colour and feeling of everything that makes us human.

Drawing comparisons with the likes of timeless creators, Cat Stevens, Townes Van Zandt, Joan Baez, Neil Young, and more, Fields’ trademark warmth of character - evident in both life and music - fuels a creative offering that’s equal parts captivating, refined and heartrendingly insightful.

With one hand on guitar and the other firmly upon heart, music moved Fields through a time when chronic illness, family separations and the weight of life changes presented this artist with her biggest challenges yet. It would be her relocation to Melbourne during which Fields would settle into her most significant relationship to date: that with her newfound network of fellow career singers, songwriters and performers. Life as she’d known it would change forever.

Newstead Live Music Festival’s Troubadour Artist of the Year (2019), winner of the MLT Songwriting Award (NZ Country Music Awards 2019) and New Zealand’s Best New Broadcaster (at age 19), Kerryn Fields has released a range of celebrated records including debut LP, Rascal (2015) and award-winning, critically acclaimed single, Mamma (2019).

Sure, her music speaks volumes. But it’s the captivating warmth and courage of this artist that really leaves the audience shining from the inside-out.

Burrinja Presents

Our very own LIVE outdoor music festival...Live on the Lawn

Sat 26 Feb @ 12.00pm | The Park at Burrinja

Returning in 2022, this live music mini Festival is ready to represent, with a line up of amazing female identifying artists from the Greater Melbourne/ Naarm region.

This year's Live on the Lawn features:

Xani Kolac ~ Contemporary violinist, composer & singer/songwriter

Fuelled by a fiercely uncommon authenticity and limitless vision for the magnitude of her craft, violinist and collaborator, XANI (Xani Kolac) is amongst the most celebrated musicians of her generation. Mesmerising adventures into the spaces between pop, jazz, electronic and chamber music repertoire are coloured by contrasts between the ferocity of her instrumental output and the unassuming warmth of her voice. Drawing parallels with the ethereal, multi-skilled likes of Camille, Björk and Australian legend of song-and-stage, Tim Minchin.

Allara ~ storyteller, composer, director, producer, musician and soundscape designer.

Allara is a powerful Yorta Yorta winyarr. She is a storyteller, composer, director, producer, musician and soundscape designer. With humour and integrity, Allara uses the double-bass and sound samples from Country to weave textures for healing in her work “I am Sovereign, I am Free”. Allara's innovative music speaks to Blak justice and sovereignty.

Carolyn Oates ~

Roots/pop artist, Carolyn Oates mixes jaw dropping guitar work with heartfelt songs that speak to the human condition. Known for her staggering array of guitar chord voicings, she adds to this a fine mastery of the lyric form, creating beautiful stories. "Unique" is a word that genuinely describes what Carolyn Oates is doing. With vocal stylings of Suzanne Vega, she combines the adventurous guitar tunings of Joni Mitchell with the dexterity of Paul Simon.

Bec Sykes ~ singer-songwriter

Layering moody melodies upon minimalist piano and guitar, Bec uses her voice as an instrument and masters the art of emo-folk. Bec has spent the past eighteen months honing her songwriting skills and playing at many of Melbourne’s most beloved intimate venues including The Wesley Anne, Grace Darling, and Some Velvet Morning. Having been crowned the winner of Melbourne label, Pieater’s ‘Pie School’ competition in late 2019, Bec has recently been in the studio with Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads, Airling) to record her first single, 'Edithvale'.

The Maes

Bring their soaring harmonies and instrumental prowess to the Lyre Room

Fri 8 April 7.30pm | Lyre Room

The Maes (sisters Maggie & Elsie Rigby) grew up the children of folk musicians, immersed in folk festivals, choir rehearsals and campfire sessions. This formative experience helped to shape two of Australian folk music’s most respected songwriters, singers and instrumentalists. Since 2014, they’ve been touring full time playing some of the world’s most prestigious roots music festivals, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the USA, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada and the Woodford Folk Festival and WOMADelaide in Australia. Their 2019 self-titled release, ‘The Maes’ won Best Folk/Roots Album of the Year at the Music Victoria Awards; their second consecutive win in this category after their Nashville-produced release, ‘Take Care Take Cover’ won the title in 2017. Alongside these accolades, their song ‘Driving Ali Through Mining Towns’ was shortlisted for the 2019 Vanda & Young Songwriting Award.

The Harbour Agency Presents:

Hot Autumn Nights • Tim Freedman live

Tim Freedman will re-emerge in March with a brand new solo show "Hot Autumn Nights 2021".

After a sold out 35 date tour in November and December, this snappy run through the country will preview three more songs from The Whitlams' forthcoming album "Gaffage and Clink", and also premiere reworkings of some of his favourite tracks from Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Randy Newman.

Performing for limited capacities, and bringing a grand piano to most of the venues, Freedman will once again mix cabaret and rock in his own sardonic style.

The Daily Telegraph wrote of his November show at the City Recital Hall, "The tall and gangly front man charmed and cajoled his 400-strong “spaced out” audience with all the debonair flair of a Bryan Ferry....The stripped back accompaniment of the piano highlighted just how cleverly constructed his lyrics are – they sound so uncontrived, which is hellish difficult to do as any would-be songwriter will tell you." A Boy Called Sailboat

Hear the Grigoryan Brothers like never before!

Acclaimed guitarists Slava & Leonard Grigoryan have expanded their creative output by crafting and recording the soundtrack to the award-winning movie ‘A Boy Called Sailboat’.  This heart-warming movie, written and developed by Melbourne-based creative team Cameron Nugent and Andrew Curry was filmed in New Mexico and stars Academy Award® winning actor J.K Simmons, Noel G, Elizabeth De Razzo, Jake Busey, Lew Temple and Julian Atocani Sanchez in the title role.

Sailboat brings love and hope to a family who have forged a simple but proud life in the drought-ridden Deep South.  One afternoon he brings home a “little guitar”.  From this moment, Sailboat and his little guitar are inseparable, and when his ill grandmother requests he write a song for her, Sailboat meanders through adversity to deliver the unimaginable – the greatest song ever written.

The Latin-themed soundtrack is a key element to the movie and provides an opportunity for audiences to hear the Grigoryan Brothers like never before.

Archie Roach: Tell Me Why

A new work sharing stories and songs from Archie's new memoir and companion album.

Not many have lived as many lives – from stolen child, teenage alcoholic, seeker, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, to social advocate and First Nations leader – but it took almost a lifetime to find who he really was.  He is Archie Roach.  His new memoir Tell Me Why (Simon and Schuster) is an intimate, moving and often confronting account of his resilience and strength of spirit, and also of a great love story. It’s an extraordinary odyssey of love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and the healing power of music.  The companion album Tell Me Why (Bloodlines), considered Roach’s 18 song ‘magnum opus’, re-imagines eleven songs which have defined his extraordinary career. Roach voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through these songs to become the legendary singer-songwriter and storyteller that he is today – beloved and respected by fans worldwide.

Lloyd Spiegel ~ Cut and Run Tour

Acoustic Blues master Lloyd Spiegel is proud to announce the release of his 10th album ‘Cut and Run’ and is headed out on a mammoth Australian tour to get people acquainted with the new tracks, and is not a show to miss for those who love incredible guitar playing, great songs and the odd tall tale.

‘Cut and Run’ is the final part of an unexpected trilogy about personal redemption Lloyd didn’t even realise he was writing until it was finished. Where previous albums ‘Backroads’ and ‘This Time Tomorrow’ had Lloyd asking questions and begging forgiveness for the sins of his past, on ‘Cut and Run’ he has found the tenacity to face the next chapter of his life.

Andy Cowan is one of Australia's foremost performing songwriters. He possesses a voice that invites comparison with the likes of Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen, with the soul of Ray Charles. His songwriting and performing skills give him a strength and quality that define him as the complete artistic entity - the "King of the Keys"

Mike Rudd’s 1st BASE sees piano accordionist George Butrumlis (Black Sorrows, Zydeco Jump, The Purple Dentists and Raga Dolls) and bassist Jeremy Alsop (Ron Charles Band, Allan Zavod, The David Chesworth Ensemble) joining Spectrum’s main man, Mike Rudd, in an acoustic-skewed reappraisal of his previously all-electric output.

For 1st BASE, Mike has chosen songs from his solo repertoire that respond to being stripped back and reworked and that have a story to tell. Of course, Rudd is inclined to make a fascinating commentary about the songs he’s playing and the bands that originally played them, so there are stories all round. Butrumlis’ lyrical piano accordion in place of Spectrum’s Hammond organ is not as implausible as it sounds, and Jeremy’s double bass lines are all about restraint and intelligence, and so you can easily imagine the pair’s instrumental combination with Rudd’s nylon-string guitar, blues harp and even recorder playing, is sublime.

Kinju Quintet - Is ‘Lily & King’ and more !
at The Skylark Room

Kinju Quintet is a Melbourne based group that plays original jazz incorporating elements of swing, blues, funk, soul and the odd bit of world music with the aim of achieving an Australian sound. The compositions allow for personal interpretation and improvisation in accordance with the themes of the songs, all of which have a set framework and theme statement. There are some fairly obvious influences from the cool sounds of the Blue Note label, particularly the sounds of the fifties and sixties and players like Miles, Monk and Mingus but essentially the aim is a joyous, soulful, laid-back ‘blowout’.

The Kinju Quintet lineup is Lily Sutton – trombone, Chelsea Allen – drums, Phil Reichman – saxophones, Sam Izzo – keyboard, Tony King – double bass.

“Kate Miller-Heidke is a genius. Her unique mix of operatic singing and pop music is a thing of beauty.  Her voice is much more than a supremely versatile instrument – it’s a weapon." – The Mercury, Tasmania

Electrify your senses with international music sensation Kate Miller-Heidke coming to enchant the Burrinja stage with her monumental voice, with support from Sunshine Coast’s newest and brightest star AYLA.

Coming to the Hills as part of her Australian tour, experience music from her acclaimed musical The Rabbits, a new cover or two and songs from her most recent record O Vertigo! – hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as a “career-best album” – as well as earlier material from across her varied career.

Kate says, 'Playing live has always been at the core of what I do. It's been a while, and I'm itching to get on the road again. I have some slightly bent new songs I'd love to play, as well as revisiting some older stuff and a snippet or two from The Rabbits. I'm really looking forward to playing in these gorgeous venues before going into studio hibernation next year.’

Kate Miller-Heidke has spent the last year spreading her wings into new creative fields – like composing and starring in the Helpmann-Award winning opera The Rabbits, and filming her television acting debut in the musical mini-series The Divorce, airing on the ABC in December - and now she is keen to get back on the road to perform material of her own.

Kate is also releasing a charity Christmas single “I’m Growing A Beard Downstairs For Christmas” by Kate Miller-Heidke featuring The Beards, with all proceeds going to Bowel Cancer Australia.

Over the last two years the Sunshine Coast’s newest and brightest star AYLA has been steadily gaining attention on the Australian music scene for her mature and compelling writing style. Her debut single “Wish I Was” was released in early 2014. Regarding the opportunity to open shows for Kate, Ayla said, "I've always admired Kate Miller-Heidke for her clever lyrics, incredible range and unique spin on pop music. She is one of Australia's best female artists and I'm absolutely honoured to be supporting her on this tour.”

Kate Ceberano & Paul Grabowsky | Tryst

Following the enormous success of the Love Songs tour in 2016, Australian music greats Kate Ceberano and Paul Grabowsky are set to tour the country once again in celebration of their debut album Tryst. Tryst is a very personal journey into words and music by two of Australia’s most respected musicians reinterpreting of some of the great love songs of our time. Kate and Paul deliver achingly, soulful renditions of songs that connect on a deep emotional level and have influenced both of them at some point in their lives. The repertoire will be as diverse as love itself - from 60s pop with Cilla Black, to 80s Aussie rock with the Divinyls, and flirtations into jazz and chanson along the way.

The performance scheduled for Thu 5 Nov 7.30pm has been cancelled in line with current advice regarding COVID-19. If you have purchased tickets to this show we will be in contact shortly to arrange a refund. Kate Ceberano & Paul Grabowsky will be returning in 2021.

Andy Cowan
at The Skylark Room

Andy Cowan is one of Australia's foremost performing songwriters. He possesses a voice that invites comparison with the likes of Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen, with the soul of Ray Charles. But these are superficial comparisons, Andy's virtuoso Piano and Keyboard playing contain both energy and melodic beauty. His songwriting and performing skills give him a strength and quality that define him as the complete artistic entity - the "King of the Keys"

An evening with Mike Rudd featuring 1st Base & Mic’N’Brock
at The Skylark Room

The Lost Ragas
-featuring Matt Walker

With support from Brian Baker

ARIA Award winner Matt Walker’s new project Lost Ragas are hard to pin down. Broken hearted alt country that flies off into amazing dual slide guitar meets lapsteel all centered around Matt Walker’s beautifully dark voice. Following on from their debut Phantom Ride which garnered ABC Radio National Album of Week, Lost Ragas have just released their second album, Trans Atlantic Highway to critical acclaim once again.

Hear songs of murder and alienation... Songs of a love that was never known and of love that was a euphoric nirvana... Songs of friendship and even a song about a stunt motorcycle legend. Evolving from real places and fashioned into something poetic and powerful, these are the stories that cement this band together.

Check out the Lost Ragas here.

Brian Baker

Brian Baker is one of the hills favourite local singer/songwriters.
Legendary for his “No Maccas” song -which was at heart of the No McDonalds in Tecoma protest campaign, he is also the host of The Leggacy Sessions open mic.

Brian’s songs are lyrically dense and musically intense, wearing creative influences such as The Beatles and Little Feat on his sleeve. Having performed in a number of acclaimed Australian bands, Brain is well known for his role in ‘The Ones’ and collaboration with Eddie Rayner from Split Enz as "The Makers.
