Arlpwe Artists

Pictorial Letter from Ali Curung

Artists from Ali Curung NT visit Burrinja for a week of demonstrations, cultural education and to present a showcase exhibition of works from the region's artists.

Now in the second consecutive year the exhibition surveys new trends in contemporary Aboriginal art of the Central Desert. The exhibition features paintings from Arplwe, a community run arts centre, featuring Kaiditch (Kaytetye) country in traditional and modern style. Painting presents a significant source of pride, direction and income for the small community of 500 representing four language groups.

‘The Arlpwe Arts Centre has 148 artists involved and is fast becoming world famous for not only its great paintings but unique traditional artefacts which include the famous No7 fighting boomerang. On this visit we will showcase the whole range of traditional artefact being produced and the culture that surrounds them.’ Ian Grieve, Business Manager, Arlpwe Art Centre.

For most of the artists this will be their first time outside the Northern Territory visiting a capital city. All involved are excited that this will present a significant opportunity for the development of cultural ties between Ali Curung and the Dandenong Ranges.

‘Being able to present these works is one thing, but to bring the artists as well  presents  a wonderful opportunity for the communities of Ali Curung and the Dandenong Ranges to interact…. students will  also have a unique opportunity to meet with Central  Desert  artists  and learn about the life in a remote Aboriginal community.’ Ross Farnell, Executive Director, Burrinja.

Official Opening: Sunday 14 September at 11am
You are invited to join artists from Ali Curung, and guests at this special opening.
